Vapefly TGO Pod Mod Starter Kit – Full Review!

Disclosure: The Vapefly TGO Pod Mod in this review was provided by our friends over at Vapefly (thank you!). Feel free to refer to their site if you would like additional info on this device or any of their upcoming products (like the TGO RBA!).

Introduction

So, pods are still around, eh?  Just the thought reminds me of Homer Simpson asking, “The internet?  Is that thing still around?”  Keep in mind that that episode was from 1999.  The internet was only a wee toddler back then and the surface of its potential was only just being scratched.  I would have never thought for a moment, that in 2020, I would be doing a vape review over the internet.  Back then, I used the internet, for one thing, you guessed it……. Farmers’ Almanac.  Don’t give me that look.

Here we are in the future.  Bossman Jeremy sends me an email saying Vapefly has a product they want us to review. Vapefly!!!  I’m not going to lie, my imagination took me straight to the Kriemhild Kit.  Jeremy, do not repeat what I said I would do to get a chance to review the Kriemhild.  I’ve had my eyes on that kit since it was released.  I have a few RTA’s from Vapefly, and each one is top-notch and I highly recommend any of their hardware.  Even their cotton is good!!

Alas, the Kriemhild was not meant to be, but what he had was equally exciting.  I would get a chance to review their newest device, a pod mod, before it has even been released!  That’s a big deal for me, a reviewer who is about as new to the review game as the internet was to Homer Simpson in 1999.  I can bet, however, the internet had and still has far more potential.  Come on, I’m an adult man.  If I can’t be honest with myself, how can I lie to you?!

That’s enough of that.  Let’s get on with the review!  Now my packaging and contents might differ from what you will receive, but here’s what was inside the box:

The Setup

The Vapefly TGO Pod Mod comes neatly packaged, sleeved inside a sturdy, almost plastic feeling box.  It’s a cardboard/paper-based box to be sure, but it’s very sturdy, smooth, and clean.  The pod sits firmly in a foam cutout, and the accessories are boxed neatly below.

Vapefly TGO Kits

Pulling the Vapefly TGO out of the package, I was surprised by its weight.  It feels heavy and sturdy in the hand.  Sometimes being light is good, but this heft instills confidence.  The paint, inspired by classic sports cars, is smooth and durable.  I put this Pod through its paces, setting it down on marble, pavement, and the rough liner of a truck bed.  There is not even a scratch on it.  Granted, I did not drop it once, which I am more proud to say than I would be giving you the results of the involuntary drop test.  I think they did an outstanding job with the aesthetics.  They were aiming for a muscle car feel and I think they hit the bulls-eye.

Vapefly TGO CartridgeFilling the pod is easy.  After press-fitting your chosen coil (either 0.3Ω or 0.6Ω mesh) in the bottom of the cartridge, the topside has a little press release lock that slides open.  Your juice tip fits right in the rubberized opening that is revealed behind the sliding top.  Filling the cartridge when it is sitting in the magnetized carrier is a bit of a guessing game.  The juice windows, although pleasing to the eye, don’t allow enough light in to see your fill level.  That’s not a deal-breaker for me because juicing the cartridge out of the pod is not a big deal and the rubber grommets at the fill port help prevent spillage.

Charging

Charging is done in a snap.  At this point, I don’t know why all devices aren’t using a USB Type-C port.  I never let the Vapefly TGO Pod completely drain to zero, but I would estimate from zero to 100% charged would take an hour or so.  While charging, it gives you the current percentage and it’s so fast to charge you can see noticeable progress from glance to glance.

Quick Note

In full disclosure, I am not a connoisseur of all things Pod Mod.  I do own a few. Some good, some not so good.  Generally, I look for a tight mouth-to-lung vape out of a pod.  A discreet setup that allows me to go stealth, under the radar in the back of a church or a courtroom.  That all depends on the Saturday night.  Right out of the box, this is obviously a direct-lung setup.  So, I changed my expectations accordingly.

The Vape

In my opinion, there wasn’t a vast difference between the 0.3Ω and 0.6Ω mesh coils.  Of course, I could run a little more power through the 0.3Ω coil.  I started with the 0.6Ω thinking, between the two, it would offer a tighter draw, and it did, slightly.  The airflow control ring lets you adjust the flow from wide open to super open! The way the device sits in the cradle doesn’t allow for much control over the airflow. Both coils gave a rich, full vape experience.  They seem to be long-lasting coils, and the mesh produces OUTSTANDING flavor!  I wouldn’t say either coil is a cloud chucker, compared to your larger sub-ohm coils, but the vapor they do produce is more than satisfying and plenty.  The bailiff gave me a wink.

Vapefly TGO White

There is the smallest amount of seepage that is caught in the cartridge cradle.  I wouldn’t call it a leak though, and nothing ends up on your trousers.  The magnets that hold the cartridge in the mod are very strong and It takes a little effort to pull it out.  I believe this is what you want.  There is zero rattles when shaking this Pod Mod, so combined with the weight, it really speaks of quality.

The 2300mah internal battery lasts me all day long.  Now, granted, I am vaping at most 40 watts with the provided coils.  Considering the Vapefly TGO has a 70-watt capacity, I am curious if Vapefly has plans for a rebuildable coil option.  Couple that with an MTL coil (nudge, nudge Vapefly), and this lust might turn into love!

The Display

Continuing with the sports car theme, the TFT screen holds up its end of the bargain.  It’s a beautiful, well lit, clear display that does resemble the dash of a sports car.  The wattage level looks as though it’s a speedometer arcing across the top of the display.  Easily read are your modes, battery level, watts, resistance, volts, puff counter, and timer.  It is a lot to fit in a 0.96” display, but they organize it well and it reads very clean.  Also, on the display, is your fingerprint function, which given the name TGO (touch and go), would be appropriate for me to discuss at this point

Touch and GO!

When you first set up the device you have to load in at least two fingerprints with the option of six fingerprints total.  This works exactly the same way as your smartphone for unlocking.  It’s very easy to set up with clear instructions provided.

Unless you bypass this mode, the fire button reads your print, vibrating once to confirm it’s you, and then fires.  If it’s not reading your registered prints it will vibrate three times and not allow the device to fire.  This feature also keeps the device from firing if it comes in contact with anything that is non-conductive.  The device remains unlocked for three minutes and then locks again.  If you choose to bypass this mode, it will remain unlocked for 24 hours and then re-enter the fingerprint lock mode.  With the allowance of 6 fingerprints, you can unlock the device in any awkwardly held fashion you choose.  Or, you can do what I did, and gift the lady a couple of fingerprints.  Birthday, check.  Christmas, check.

At first, I thought this was a bit gimmicky.  Are we looking for unnecessary improvements to outdo the competition?  On second thought, it might be brilliant.  The vape world needs everything we can get to show the public we take the safety and responsibility of vaping seriously.  With this function, the chance of a child getting a hold of, and operating this device is dramatically reduced.  It is not inconvenient in the least to wait the .02 seconds for it to read your print and fire.  Well done Vapefly.  This is not only a smart feature for your newest device, but it also advances the rest of the vaping community.

Overall Impression

I really enjoyed vaping The Vapefly TGO Pod Mod.  It’s a smart, well thought out device.  I would not consider this just another pod in the river of pods pouring into the market these days.  It stands on its own, but is not without a few imperfections either:

[Pros]

    • Brilliant Fingerprint Security
    • Long-Lasting Battery
    • Quick Charging
    • Great Flavor Production
    • Beautiful Appearance
    • Powerful 70 Watts
    • Automatic Power Adjustment To The Coil

[Cons]

    • Little control over the airflow
    • .03Ω and .06Ω coils are very similar in performance
    • Just a little seeping of juice from the cartridge

Vapefly TGOFinal Thoughts

Vapefly TGO YellowI have very little negative to say about the Vapefly TGO Pod Mod.  The quality of the vape matches the quality of the build.  To me, this device speaks to the most current progress in the evolution of vaping.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that an MTL coil and an RBA will be following the release of this device in the near future.  If you’re a fan of direct-lung Pods then this device should be on your radar.  If you’re a parent and want to do everything you can to keep vaping out of the hands of children, this device is for you.  And if you’re like me and just like new and shiny stuff, I highly recommend this Pod.  Well done Vapefly.  Thanks for letting us review it.

**UPDATE**

In the time between my submitting this review and its posting to the website, Vapefly contacted Jeremy with some additional information they would like us to share.  First, the TGO coils are compatible with the Smok RPM Pod Mod.  I love it when coils are interchangeable with another company’s device.  I think this benefits both parties.  Secondly, a 0.2Ω coil will be released soon.  I’m guessing the difference I would’ve liked to see between the 0.3Ω and 0.6Ω coils will be recognized here with an even lower resistance coil.  And finally, an RBA coil will be available soon!  This is exciting news.  Builders rejoice and get ready to put all of the TGO’s 70 watts to use.

That’s all for now.  If any additional information about the Vapefly TGO Pod Mod becomes available we will be sure to pass it along to you.  Thank you for reading!
